Stratification of Arts

Art is everywhere! Whether you're in a small town or big city, there is art. I find that if you're in a bigger city, you have more experiences to view artwork. It seems that is more opportunities to view various forms of art in the big city center. I will use Prince George for example. I know Prince George is not a big metropolis, however, there is art galleries, a play house, a theatre production, dance studios and many other amenities that promote art forms. Since being in Prince George, I have been exposed to more art forms and it has been great trying new things. I have been to a play at Theatre Northwest and i thought that the play was very good. Seeing small productions really helps one appreciate the amount of work that goes into creating a production. Even the smallest town can create a play, with minimal resources, and the local people may love it. The bigger the production means more money and resources go into making the play, means that it attracts greater talent and more likely a more fulfilling entertainment experience. This stratification of art work through the most simplest of forms to the complex allows you to see where the work goes.

  1. I've seen a few plays at TNW over the years too--and only remember one I didn't really like--mostly because I didn't "get" it! The others were so well done and I remember thinking it was amazing that a town "as small as Prince George" could put on such wonderful productions! :)

  2. I think, once you are used to looking for art and for creativity, you are able to find more of it in small towns. I am amazed at the creative people who live in Big River, Sask - a tiny little place where I have a house now that is, on the surface, more about outdoor sports with motors and guns. But there are poets and painters, carvers and crafters. Sadly, most of the poetry and visual art is, as far as I can see, done by women. And at UNBC my friends who are English profs say that most who study literature are female. You can be one who, simply by modeling your own interests, passes along a powerful message that reading is also for men. And perhaps, at least in your own classroom, you will renew the art of storytelling. But I agree - a city has larger arts opportunities - I am glad that you have taken advantage of this setting to experience new things.
